A good crowd turned out for this year’s Remembrance Sunday services in Royston town centre, as respects were paid to the fallen heroes of the past and present.
It was a solemn but impressive occasion, with a parade marching movingly through the town. Young and old gathered together for a Remembrance service led by Revd. John Fidler of St John’s Parish Church, Royston.
Dignitaries included Neville Reyner, deputy to the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, and Royston mayor Vera Swallow.
Chris Murphy, the chairman of Royston’s Royal British Legion, has been planning the event since August.
During the service he read the Act of Remembrance and the poem Aftermath by war veteran Siegfried Sassoon.
Mr Murphy told the Crow: ”In total 39 organisations all laying wreaths had turned out in support of the event, along with the army, RAF cadets and veterans.
“It’s amazing that more and more people seem to come every year, which is very heartening as many groups contribute to make this special occasion possible.
“I would just like to say a big thank you to everybody helped in the process, with a special thank you to the police and emergency services whose support is invaluable.”
There were also services in Royston’s surrounding villages to mark Remembrance Sunday.
