Recycling in North Herts is on the up according to new figures released by North Herts District Council.
The amount of waste recycled during the last quarter of 2013 increased by over half (53 per cent) in comparison with the same period in 2012. The amount of waste being sent to landfill sites is also down by nearly a quarter (24 per cent).
It currently costs council tax payers over £100 for every tonne of waste sent to landfill so along with helping to protect the environment, there is also a significant financial benefit from diverting waste from landfill.
North Herts residents also took over 300 Christmas trees along to local garden centres for disposal in January 2014, while 3.385 tonnes of small electrical goods where collected for recycling during two Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment events held earlier this year.
Cllr Lynda Needham, Leader of the district council, said: “The rise in recycling rates is fantastic news, and a big thank you must go to everyone in North Herts for playing such a vital role in helping to protect the environment and manage the growing cost of waste disposal.”
