MELBOURN parish council believes people power can prevent the opening hours at Meldreth rail station ticket office being cut.

The council is urging rail users to write to train operator First Capital Connect urging it to reverse its decision to reduce the office's hours on weekdays and possibly close it altogether at weekends.

A council spokesman said: "Closing the ticket office all day on Saturday affects people who are not regular travellers, such as the young and the elderly, and they may not know how to get cheaper tickets."

First Capital Connect says that it is making the cuts because many people prefer to use ticket machines, or book online. The new opening hours are likely to come into force in March.

Veteran campaigner Terry Hutt also plans to fight the proposed cuts.

He said: "The station is dark at night and could seem dangerous on your own.

"Also a machine can't talk to you like a person can, and I worry that if they do this in Meldreth they could follow suit at Royston."
