PUPILS who turned their classroom into an underwater world have won an art competition.

Children from Bassingbourn Primary School were the regional challenge winners of the Barbie Mermadia Competition, which involved them taking part in an art challenge in association with the Prince of Wales Art Foundation.

The requirement of the competition was for teachers to base a class topic on the seaside and mermaids.

Pupils learned about recycling materials on the beach and they turned their play area into an underwater world and rock pool.

Teaching assistant Helen Pigott said: "We thought their work was worthy of being entered into the competition."

Each pupil received an art pack, and the school was given £50 to spend on art materials.
