PUPILS at St Mary's school in Royston have been learning about a healthy diet as part of the school's Healthy Living Week.

The children have taken part in a host of activities, including designing work sheets, promoting healthy eating and making fruit smoothies.

School nurse Helen Morrison gave a talk on the importance of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

She said: "The children were already very knowledgeable about what they should and shouldn't be eating, and were receptive to what I had to say."

Class teacher Steven Cartwright, who organised Healthy Living Week, said: "The main purpose of the week is to get the children to think about living a healthy lifestyle.

"We've been particularly concentrating on diet, and activities have taken place in subjects across the curriculum.

"We've had great contributions from Tesco, Somerfield, and Waitrose, who have all donated fruit, while Royston Rugby Club came in to give the children some tips on exercise. The whole community has been getting involved which is really good to see," he said.

On Tuesday the children held an after-school smoothie sale, assisted by a group of parents.

Year 4 pupil Joshua Austin said: "I really enjoyed making the smoothies. Apple and banana is my favourite flavour.
