ROMAN Way School in Royston will be blooming next spring due to a new raised garden.

The garden, which has been partly designed by members of the school's gardening club, was opened last week.

Liz Wiltshire, cash and services manager from Tesco Royston, who helped to fund the project, attended the opening ceremony.

Headteacher Suzanne Summerhayes said: "The school decided earlier this year that it wanted to develop the grounds.

"The gardening club was keen to have somewhere to do some planting, but we did have a place that was suitable, so it was suggested that we build a raised garden.

"Tesco's contacted us asking if there were any projects we needed help with, and they have been very generous, providing plants and compost."

Gardening club teacher Sally Cottam was behind the overall design of the raised garden, with input from pupils.

Mrs Summerhayes said: "The children gave us lots of ideas about what they wanted to see in the garden.

"For example, it has been built on two levels so that some children can kneel and some can stand when planting.

"It won't just be the gardening club who benefit from this as it will be useful for teaching subjects across the whole curriculum," she added.
