Tannery Drift School in Royston, started the Shrove Tuesday celebrations with its annual pancake contest.

Children from all year groups joined the playground excitement, along with staff and parents.

Pupils were also taught about the meaning and importance of Shrove Tuesday and learned why they have pancakes on this day.

Lyn Simons, teacher and organiser of the pancake race, said: "The children had a wonderful time both taking part in the races and learning about the day itself.

"Every year all involved have a great time, including the teachers. In fact, they probably have more fun than the pupils.
