THE SKULL and crossbones was flying high over Millfield First School in Buntingford this week as it held a pirate day.
About 70 key stage one pupils at the school dressed up and enjoyed a day of pirate-related lessons.
Class teacher Maree Peebles said: "At the moment we're starting a mini-topic on pirates, as part of our main topic on travelling, so it seemed a good way to launch it by having a dressing up day.
"We've been doing a few pirate-themed activities and it's been a lot of fun."
Tasks for the children included a treasure hunt which helped them learn about reading co-ordinates from a map, and creative writing lessons based around pirate characters.
Miss Peebles added: "The children get a lot out of these kinds of days, and you can cover a lot of different areas.
"We try to have plenty of special events and trips out, because Pictured are Owen Slade, Charlotte Hurny, and Holly Paige.
