The campaign to save Grade II-listed The Cabinet at Reed from being turned permanently into a house has been given a boost by the parish council.
The authority has decided to consult parishioners on the possibility of borrowing money from the Public Works Loan Board to buy the pub if it comes back on the market, and there will be a public meeting at Reed Village Hall in Blacksmith’s Lane from 8pm on November 29.
Planning permission for change of use of the pub had been rejected by North Herts District Council, and this is currently being appealed by the owner.
Mike Howes, chair of the Save the Cabinet Action Group – which runs regular pop-up pub nights, including the latest one on Saturday which raised £800 – said: “We welcome the initiative by the parish council to see if there is public support for buying the pub on behalf of the community.”
