POLICE in Herts have new technology in their hands.
About 1,000 police officers have been issued with personal digital assistants to help while out on patrol.
The hand-held device enables officers to gain immediate access to the Police National Computer to check on names and vehicles.
Other information includes a search through voters' registers and details about police procedure, policies and legislation.
Herts police are one of five English forces which is currently involved in a pilot trial of the scheme.
Deputy chief constable Simon Parr said: "These devices provide officers with improved information at the scene of incidents to assist them with decision making."
He said the device meant that police could remain on patrol rather than return to police stations to check details.
