A DAY aimed at encouraging people to take part in sport is being run at the Royston Leisure Centre on Sunday.

It has been organised by the Royston & District Sports Council.

Sports council chairman Ken Charles said: "We hope the event will raise awareness of the many opportunities on offer to both adults and youngsters."

The event will give clubs from Royston and the surrounding area the opportunity to demonstrate their particular skills - and perhaps, more important, give visitors the chance to try out a sport.

"We are keen to increase the level of participation in sport," said Mr Charles.

Visitors will be able to try their hand at such sports as netball, karate, badminton, golf - and even riding a BMX machine.

There will be demonstrations from Royston Rugby Club, Bassingbourn Badminton Club, Royston Hockey Club, Corvus Cornix Basketball Club and Bassingbourn Snow Sports.

Mr Charles is keen to see youngsters involved in sport.

He said that being involved in sport means young people can achieve the minimum of three hours activity which the Government advocates as an addition to the minimum two hours in curriculum lesson time.

And he stressed: "In addition it is a route to decrease the chances of becoming obese."

He continued: "Enormous efforts are devoted to furthering the development of our clubs and schools, both in managing and coaching.

"We are always seeking to provide high-quality training and preparation for top class competition."

He pointed out that clubs often have at least six teams participating in a particular sport, and there is a comprehensive programme for young people.

The sports fayre will give people the opportunity to become involved both in a sport and to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.
