PLANS are under way to demolish a former research building in Melbourn and use the site for a housing development. A planning application has been submitted to South Cambridgeshire District Council to demolish Cambridge House, in Back Lane, and build 20 homes. The building has been left empty for three years after Cambridge Antibody Technology (CAT) moved to Cambridge. Rowena Gardner, the company's director of corporate communications, said: "We vacated this building three years ago and since then, it has been left empty. "We've explored several proposals and this has been the most acceptable from Camstead Homes. "It's a joint application but is being driven by Camstead Homes." Simon Somerville-Large, Camstead Homes director, said: "I think this project would be a great improvement for the area. "At the moment, you've got an industrial building on there which would generate a lot of traffic and it is not well situated for a commercial space, as it is surrounded by residential housing." The application, for 15 homes and five affordable homes, is now with the district council awaiting a decision.
