WITH construction of Royston's all-weather pitch well underway, organisers this week received a £150,000 cheque from one of their main backers.

The Johnson Matthey Sports Club agreed to help fund the pitch, which is being built at The Meridian School, at it's AGM back in 2006. This week, Bernie Wilson, trustee of the Sports Club, presented a cheque to Dirk Withey, co-ordinator of the project.

Mike Thrower, from the all-weather pitch committee, said: "The donation was uniquely the result of Club members' generosity and not the decisions of fund managers, the source of the remainder of the £620,000 total cost of the project.

"It is hoped that the long association of JM Sports Club in supporting events in the town will be perpetuated through the building of the artificial grass pitch at Meridian School," he said.

Work on the pitch should be completed by the end of July, with an opening ceremony to take place in September.
