A PENSIONERS club facing temporary closure has been saved by Royston’s firefighters.

The Evergreen Club were left without a home after The Masonic Lodge, in Jepps Lane, closed for refurbishment on August 3.

It looked like the group would have to briefly disband but Royston’s firefighters opened the doors to their station.

Joan Inwood, chairman of the Evergreen Club, said: “The firemen were so kind and offered for us to go up there.

“It’s got great community spirit up there, they make us a cup of tea, put the tables and chairs out there and made sure every pensioner was there.”

The club will continue there until August 31 and they will then return to the Masonic Hall.
