NEW tennis facilities could be erected in Buntingford if residents and one of the schools join together to support the £100,000 project. Liz Wade, chairman of Buntingford Tennis Club, has raised the proposal after talking with the Lawn Tennis Association. She said the project could include three floodlight courts, an all-weather surface, a children's zone and a clubhouse. Schools, too, would have use of the facility during the school day with the club having use at all other times. Mrs Wade said: "People in Buntingford need something to do so the club would provide the community with a much needed facility." If either Freman College or Edwinstree School makes a site available and becomes a partner with the Hertfordshire Lawn Tennis Association, the association is set to fund 50 per cent of the project. And if 200-300 people show interest in becoming a member then its funding could be raised to 75 per cent with the remainder of the funding coming from local authorities and other organisations. As a licensed LTA tennis coach, Mrs Wade said: "I have got youngsters who are playing really well. They are creating a base for juniors so we need a facility where we can play 12 months-a-year. "At the moment we have to play at the multi-sports facility at Norfolk Road Playing Fields, which is really decrepid so this is something we desperately need." Lindsey Poulton of the Buntingford and District Sports Assoication, said: "The LTA is interested getting something in Buntingford because of their interest in the sport. But it would also up the profile of the school that joins the partnership." She added that both schools are interested, but are not as yet committed to the project because they have to measure their sites. - Anyone interested in signing up can call Liz Wade on 01763 273646 or obtain a registration form from the website at www.buntingford.com
