Parker the puppy has been out in Royston helping to spread the word among dog owners to pick up after their pooches.

The crackdown on dog mess by North Herts District Council is part of national Dogs Trust campaign, The Big Scoop.

Councillor Bernard Lovewell, responsible for environmental health, said: “Most dog owners are very responsible and do pick up after their pets, but some people ignore the rules and this creates a problem for everyone.

“Not picking up dog mess on public land is an offence, carrying with it a fine of up to £1,000, and we want people to understand that if you leave it behind, you could get fined.

“It is not only unpleasant, but potentially harmful as dog faeces can contain a parasitic worm, which if transferred to humans can result in blindness.”
