MUMS and toddlers gathered in the Priory Memorial Gardens to celebrate the first anniversary of the Royston Buggy Fit.

The group was set up by Royston Health Centre to encourage parents with babies to socialise and keep fit by meeting up and pushing their buggies around Therfield Heath every week.

Health visitor Beverly Turner said: "There is a number of benefits for both the parents and the children. The child gets fresh air while the parents can exercise.

"Some people find parent and toddler groups difficult, but the Buggy Fit group is more informal and relaxed.

"We walk up a lot of hills, which can be quite strenuous. But after five or six weeks you really start to see a difference. It helps burn a lot of calories, which is particularly important for new mums."

Buggy Fit member Maria Stevens, 30, said: "I've noticed that I've got a lot fitter and I feel more healthy. I would recommend it to any parent with a young child. It's very enjoyable."

Jo Peacock, 27, said: "It's nice to catch up and at the same time do something healthy for both your baby and yourself. The group is very sociable and it's nice for mums and dads to interact and get out of the house."

There are 15 members of the group who meet every Friday at the Heath Sports Club.

Mrs Turner said: "It's definitely something that is taking off and is an activity that benefits all who are involved."
