CARLO Zambonini and Ian Hart took giant steps in aid of Cancer Research UK by completing the Hertfordshire Way.

The 166-mile circular trip which runs around the whole county, took more than 10 days to complete.

They have raised £1,200 through individual pledges and donations from their respective employers, supermarket chains Sainsbury's and Tesco.

Carlo, 52, who works for Sainsbury's, said: "Between us we know people who have lost friends and family from cancer."

Ian, 27, from Melbourn, said: "A friend of mine had cancer and luckily came through. There have also been quite a few members of my family who have had cancer, so it's a charity close to my heart."

This was the second time Carlo, who lives in Royston, had completed the walk. Last year he raised £350 for Cancer Research UK.

He said: "The walk went well and the weather was really good. Simply by doing the walk we have been able to hopefully make a difference and help others."

The route included walking around the edge of the Chiltern Hills and the National Trust estate at Ashridge Forest.

They divided the walk into manageable sections of about 10-miles-a-day.

Both said they would continue to raise money for charity through similar fund-raising efforts.

"We will definitely be doing something like this again," said Ian.

And Carlo added: "I've always thought about doing the London marathon, or maybe something like a mountain challenge.
