BURGLARS took £2,000 of stock from a hotel which only re-opened earlier this month.

The raiders broke into the Sheene Mill Hotel in Melbourn on Saturday night, and took stock from the bar, including champagne and single malt whisky.

Owners Serena Saunders and Adam Jordan were sleeping in an adjacent room at the time.

Miss Saunders said: “They broke in through the window at the side of the bar. It feels as if they knew where to go, and what makes me feel really sick is the thought that they might have been in beforehand to plan what they were going to do.

“We sleep in the office next to the bar and didn’t hear a thing. In a way I’m angry with myself that I didn’t wake up, but it’s quite scary when you think about it.”

Sheene Mill remained open this week despite the break-in, and Miss Saunders said she and Mr Jordan - known as ‘Jordan’ to regulars– have had a “positive response” from customers since taking over.

Her parents, celebrity chef Steven Saunders and his wife Sally, ran the restaurant and nine-bedroom hotel between 1998-2006.

“Everyone has made Jordan and I really welcome and business has been steady so far,” said Miss Saunders.

“It’s a real landmark building and we want to restore it to its former glory.”

Anyone with information on the burglary should contact Cambridgeshire Police on 101.
