Open letter sent to Network Rail head calling for ‘appalling’ Foxton Level Crossing problem to be solved

A faulty pedestrian gate at a level crossing in Foxton will take another 10 weeks to repair – despite already being broken for four months, Network Rail has confirmed.
Susan van de Ven, who chairs the Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton Rail User Group, has expressed her anger over the ‘shambles’ and has written to the managing director of Network Rail requesting a human transport.
She said: “The farcical situation at Foxton Level Crossing won’t be alleviated any time soon.”
Last month, the Crow reported that 34 offences have been committed at the crossing in the last year, with incidents ranging from trespassing to failing to stop at signals.
A spokeswoman for Network Rail said: “We are very sorry that we haven’t yet repaired the gates.
“We’ve had issues sourcing specialist parts but are working to find a solution to this problem and fix the gates as soon as we can.”
Susan wrote an open letter to Network Rail managing director Richard Schofield, calling for urgent action at the dangerous crossing. In it, she expressed her concern about the ‘appalling’ situation, as the crossing intersects the busy A10.
She said: “I am now inundated with calls and emails from understandably angry people who cannot move about the crossing in safety on foot.
“Everyone using the train service or just moving about in the village deserves a safe passage.”
A feasibility study conducted last year recommended the closure of the level crossing, in favour of different options including a road bridge or underpass.
Network Rail says a feasibility study into a long-term solution been put to one side until at least 2020 as funding for the scheme is not available in the current budget, which runs until 2019.
