JUST one bid has been submitted to run the twice-a-week Royston market.

Now North Herts District Council has to decide whether to give Royston Town Council and the Royston Town Centre Forum the go-ahead to take over.

Under usual circumstances the district council would be looking for at least two bids for the running of the market.

But a report to members of the council's Cabinet says that there could be an "exemption" to the rules.

The report, however, stressed that unless the bid is seen as an "exemption" the tender process will come to an end.

The report adds that to keep the market operation would cost the district council £60,000 above the budget already earmarked for 2008-09.
