A DIGITAL archive for Orwell is to be created, thanks to a lottery grant.

The Orwell Community Archive Group has received £2,230 from the Awards for All small grants scheme.

It will use the cash to help develop its own website.

Spokesman for the group Derek Skipper, said: "We've got a number of things we need to buy with a view to getting our website up and running.

"We're going to get a dedicated lap top and digital recording equipment so that we can carry out a survey in the village and get people's memories recorded.

"We're also buying a scanner so we can make digital copies of old photographs and documents."

The group has also set its sights on a projector and screen, which will be used for public talks and meetings.

"At the moment the most we can do is have three or four people crowded round a computer screen," said Derek.

"But once we've got the projector we'll be able to hold larger meetings and give people who are interested an insight into the history of Orwell."

Orwell Community Archive Group is part of the Cambridgeshire Community Archive Network, which encompasses about 30 villages in South Cambridgeshire.

Further details of the group's plans for the future will be published in the next edition of the Orwell parish magazine.
