ROYSTON’S longest serving council tenant was on hand to mark the official opening of the new North Herts Homes offices last week.

Joyce Wilson, who has lived in Days Close for 67 years, cut the ribbon at the Angel Pavement office on Wednesday.

A Royston resident for all of her 85 years, Mrs Wilson said that she has always been happy in her home town.

“Being here for so long means I meet people in the town whenever I pop out,” she said. I can turn a corner and bump into someone else, and everyone has always been very friendly.

“I love to sit down at The Cross or in the park and watch the world go by. The town has never let me down.”

Mrs Wilson, who worked as a cleaner at Heath House for a short time, was born in her parents’ home in Mill Road. She moved to Days Close when she married her husband Sidney, who was a welder.

She is pleased with the way the council have services her home down the years.

“I’ve had new doors, new windows, a stair lift and central heating,” she said. “When we moved in we had to boil the water ourselves, but they council were quick to help us out when central heating came out.”

She lists he favourite place in the town as Therfield Heath, and said she misses some attractions that are no longer about.

“Since the war we have lost the swimming pool and the cinema, though I am glad to hear one is coming back. My old school, Queen’s Road, is no longer there either.

“I always love reading The Crow though and I always have done.”
