Every year, Royston District Scouts hold a St George’s Day celebration and this year it was the turn of 11th Royston (Barrington) to host the event.
In total, 150 beavers, cubs, scouts, explorers and group leaders marched through the village, with ages ranging from six to 70 years old.
They started with a parade along the village green and headed to All Saints Church in Haslingfield Road where Rev Felicity Couch and the district chaplain Rev Heidi Huntley had prepared a service especially for the group.
The church was packed to its limits to hear one of the youngest members read the lesson and all the children, young people and leaders were reminded of the scout laws and re-took their promises.
Award presentations were carried out to leaders who had successfully completed training or had done years of service before marchers paraded back to the village green for a picnic and activities based on traditional village fete games with a knights theme, including stocks, jousting on space hoppers disguised and horses, horse shoe throwing and culminated in tug of war, which saw the home team beavers claim victory.
Barrington group scout leader Carol Alderton said: “We had good, old-fashioned fun, with each group bringing their own selection of games – there wasn’t an iPad in sight.
“It was thoroughly enjoyed by all and the district commissioner said it was the best St George’s Day yet!”
A collection was made and the proceeds will go to Aurora Meldreth Manor School and its young adults’ service, Orchard Manor.
