BASSINGBOURN Village College has been praised for its effective leadership and examples of outstanding teaching in an Ofsted inspection.

The Government inspectors also praised the behaviour and attitudes of students and the provision made for those with learning needs.

Head teacher at the college Scott Hudson, who was recognised for his leadership and clear vision for the future, said: "Clearly the report indicates that we have much to be proud of and celebrate.

"The inspectors indicated that we are a very caring and supportive school and students enjoy college and approach their studies very positively."

In her report inspector Rhona Seviour said: "There is a good curriculum, which offers a very varied range of opportunities to support students' personal and social development and their awareness of other cultures."

The college was encouraged to improve standards and achievements in mathematics, ensure students are appropriately challenged in lessons and increase the rigour with which lessons are monitored.

The report also stated the college should evaluate and improve the effectiveness of middle management and leaders.

Mr Hudson said: "We recognise that there are areas in which we need to improve and we are already taking action to address these.

"The developments we are making to our curriculum and improvements to our facilities will enable the quality of our provision and standards to improve further.
