THE official title of Fish Hill Square has been unvieled by North Herts District Council after a public consultation - and shockingly it’s Fish Hill Square.
Over the last month Royston residents were given the chance to pick a name from a shortlist of seven possible titles, including Jubilee Square, Old Court House Square and Roysia Square.
Tom Brindley, NHDC’s portfolio holder for planning and transport, said: “We wanted to give the people of Royston the opportunity to have a say on the future official name of the square, and it’s interesting that the people of Royston have made it clear they like the name Fish Hill Square.
“In fact, we received nearly twice as many votes for it as we did for the second-favourite option, Jubilee Square.”
The site is currently being refurbished by NHDC and new trees will be planted on the site and a new sculpture will be installed, designed by 17-year-old Vicky Chapman, from Meridian School.
The name will now be etched in to new granite benches that will be placed in the square.
Other work set to begin in July will see new paving laid, new lighting installed and trees planted to create an improved public space in the town centre.
