Now the leaves are on the trees and spring is in full swing, one North Herts village’s thoughts quickly turn to their major annual event, which brings in heaps of visitors and raises cash for community causes.

Barkway Market is set in Manor Farm, one of the village’s most picturesque old houses, and head of the organising committee, Tom Wornham is sure this weekend’s event will be another cracker.

“There’s something very English about Barkway Market,” he said.

“I love to see all the stallholders and visitors with big smiles on their faces, and to hear the sound of the brass band wafting across the delightful grounds where we are lucky enough to be able to hold the event.

“No wonder so many people come every year.”

The market is organised by Barkway Village Hall, a registered charity, and benefits numerous other good causes too. Tom paid tribute to all of those who help with the organisation.

“A lot of effort goes into planning the Barkway Market, and on the day we have volunteers manning the gates and looking after the car park, alongside the early morning brigade who help stallholders find their plots and the late shift who help clear up afterwards.

“The Market couldn’t happen without them and I’m hugely grateful.”

They have lots to live up to as 2016 was a bumper year, with every plot sold and the crowds enjoying glorious May sunshine. Of course organisers are hoping for a repeat this year.

The market features around 120 stalls offering goods including antiques, plants, clothing, food, books and lots more, and a sizeable and popular craft marquee.

But Barkway Market is not just about grabbing bargains. There will be places to eat and drink with proceeds benefiting Barkway Church and Barkway First School.

There will also be a A Come and Sing event – where participants are invited to a short rehearsal followed by a performance in the Church.

There will also be the miniature steam railway offering rides.

And Barkway Market is a regular booking for Royston Town Band, fresh from their performance at Royston May Fayre last weekend.

Barkway Market will take place tomorrow from 10am to 4pm. Admission £2, under 16s free. Parking is free.
