YOUNGSTERS in Melbourn are to get a new skate ramp within the next two months.

Demolition of the current ramp had been deferred because they were upset about the prospect of not having a ramp.

But at a meeting of Melbourn Parish Council on Monday, members decided to build a new ramp, costing £7,200.

In the past, £13,000 has been spent on the skate ramp.

Cllr Bob Trimble said: "It's probably 10 years past its sell-by date. It's been good value for money in terms of what it's done for the youths.

"I don't think we can leave it. If we erect a new ramp it will see us through a good few years and we could add to it in the future."

The ramp has recently had one of its sides ripped off, so temporary boarding has been put in to keep it up and running until it is demolished.

Cllr Colin Charter said, however: "If this is what youths are going to do to it I suggest we take it down for three months.

"We're throwing good money after bad. What's the point of spending more money if this is going to happen?"

Cllr Mike Sherwen described the ramp as being "at the point of collapse".
