A NEW corporate logo outside Barclays Bank in Royston should not be allowed, say councillors.

Members of Royston Town Council's planning committee said at a meeting on Monday evening that the new sign was out of keeping with the building.

And Cllr Philip Mayne told the committee: "We should not be bowing to a commercial whim."

The committee decided it could not support a planning application for the corporate logo on the building.

And it was annoyed that the signs were already in place, even though a decision over a planning application had not been made.

The committee was told the North Herts District Council's conservation officer still had to visit the site and report on the signs.

Cllr Lynn Berry said: "The signs are not conducive to the building.

"It is out of keeping."

But Cllr Rod Kennedy said that most banks had in recent years changed their corporate image with the introduction of a new logo.

"There's no reason for us to object to this," he said.

Cllr Bill Prime, however, raised the question of a previous hanging sign at the bank, which was removed about eight years ago.

"I know we wanted that old sign returned and we asked at the time for it to be put back on the building.

"It was more in keeping with the building and the High Street," he said.
