Beaver takes to the ducking stall

NEW mayor Martin Beaver made a splash at the Royston parish church fete on Saturday.

Cllr Beaver, who was named Royston’s mayor last week, took a turn on the infamous ducking stall as part of his first official outing as mayor.

Other victims of the ducking stall included town and district councillor Paul Grimes, and Crow reporter Matthew Gooding.

Later on in the day Cllr Beaver also took part in the traditional mayor’s bounce on the fete bouncy castle, as well as awarding raffle prizes.

Rev Les Harman, vicar of the church, said: “It was a good day, and we were about £50 up on last year’s total, so we made approximately £3,650.

“We had plenty of people coming down and enjoying themselves, and there were lots of different events on.

“The weather could have been better, but I think the fact that so many things going on in the town, such as the opening of the new shop [Store 21], helped draw the crowds.”

All the proceeds from the fete are being put towards the cHALLenge appeal, which aims to raise £500,000 to fund the building of a new hall at the church.

Dates coming up in support of the appeal include an open garden event at Bull Farm, Nuthampstead, on July 4, and a similar day featuring gardens in Royston on July 11.
