THE Meridian School in Royston has been awarded a prestigious Artsmark Silver award by the Arts Council.

Artsmark is a national arts award for schools that demonstrate a commitment to developing their arts provision in subjects across the curriculum.

Head teacher Dr Michael Firth said: "I am delighted the Arts Council has recognised Meridian's progressive arts programme.

"We were only prevented from achieving the gold award because we do not have a Year 7 and Year 8.

"To achieve silver status is a remarkable achievement for an upper school," he said

Meridian were one of only 452 schools nation wide to be awarded the silver artsmark, while 695 went on to achieve gold status.

The school impressed the Arts Council with productions of Les Miserables, Godspell, and Old Times, and a music tour of Belgium which featured a concerts at the Menin gate in Ypres.
