A BID to end bus pass chaos was expected to be made last night (Wednesday).

Members of North Herts District Council's Royston area committee were due to consider earmarking about £3,000 for pensioners' half-fares from Royston to Cambridge to be restored.

Pensioners were charged double for the journey when the new scheme was introduced and ended a half-price fare system.

Many told The Crow that they were angry and confused about the new bus pass scheme which made them pay full fare for the journey on the No 26 service to Cambridge.

Councillors, however, were expected to "subsidise" the scheme for half-fares.

The move was approved by the council's cabinet on Tuesday evening - but it needed the rubber-stamp of the area committee.

Area committee chairman Cllr Bill Davidson and Cllr Fiona Hill were expected to urge members to approve the scheme last night.

Members were told that the district council had received about 100 calls about the issue.

The measure is seen as an interim move as it has already been announced by the Government that free fare bus travel would be introduced in 2008.

Members were also told that the introduction of a subsidy would be "good value for Royston residents" and mean that half-fare travel would be available to both Cambridge city centre and Addenbrooke's Hospital.
