A MOTORIST was killed in a collision on the A505 at Flint Cross on Monday.

Levani Mangigashvili, 22, of Swift Close, Royston, died when his vehicle, a Ford Granada, collided with a Ford Iveco 7.5 tonne refrigerated box van.

The road was closed at the junction of the A10 and the M11 until 4.50pm and caused traffic to be diverted.

The driver of the Ford Iveco, a 47-year-old man from Attleborough, Norfork, suffered slight injuries.

This is the second accident in three weeks on the A505.

On November 28, a Toyota Yaris and a Honda Accord collided.

Three people were taken to hospital with serious injuries following the crash at Woven Place junction.

A 90-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Toyota, died in Addenbrooke's Hospital on December 9.

There was another fatality near the junction with the B1368 at Flint Cross in September when Heather McDonald, 71, of Caister-on-Sea died.

In April, Laurell Powell, 25, of Wattisham, Suffolk, was killed in a crash on the A505 at Melbourn and in January Laura Willis, 20, and Brendon Noades, 42, were killed when their car struck a tree.

Police traffic officers are warning motorists to "drive seasonally" and to slow down on the roads.

Pc Chris Breeze said: "At this time of the year, you have around half the grip on the road that you do in the summer.

"In the summer, if you skid at 40mph, you will travel 20 metres. In the winter, if you skid, you will travel 20 metres at just 24mph. Essentially, it is much easier to skid at a slower speed.

"The roads have patches of damp this time of year, as well as mud, leaves and on days like today (Wednesday), patches of ice as well as patches of thick fog making visibility bad.
