The wife of a Royston man who died in a road accident has organised a dog show to raise cash for the charity which has supported the family since the tragedy.

Carol Bailey’s husband Mitchell died in January when a fire engine on an emergency call hit him as he walked by the roundabout connecting Old North Road with Burns Road in Royston.

She has organised the Companion Dog Show as a fun day out for the whole family to enjoy – especially the four-legged members.

Mrs Bailey told the Crow: “The Road Victims Trust have been supporting us since the accident so we wanted to give something back.

“We’re all about dogs – Mitchell and I would walk our four dogs together, and we used to show dogs, so it seemed like a good way to do something for Mitchell.”

The show – a short trip up the A1198 at Longstowe Village Hall – starts at 10am with pedigree classes, the winners of which will be judged for best in show, reserve best in show and best puppy in show.

There will be a puppy event – open to dogs aged three to six months – just for fun and socialisation.

And there will also be novelty classes from 1pm, for categories including best trick, fancy dress, and waggiest tail.

Mrs Bailey said: “It’s the first show I’ve ever organised, and we just hope the weather’s good and people come along to help raise lots of money for the cause.

“It’s a local charity, and you don’t hear about the great work these charities do until you need them.

“What they do is so very important because you never know what will happen in future.

“It’s not all doom and gloom for us, because we have a focus – we want to raise as much awareness and funds for the charity as possible as they do phenomenal work. “

Mrs Bailey’s event also follows the Baileys’ son George, 22, taking on a 24-hour gaming marathon for the cause – where he raised more than £1,300.

For the companion dog show, entry fees are £1.50 per class and your dog can enter pedigree shows from 10am, and the first judging is at 11am. Novelty shows are the in the afternoon, and there will be refreshments too.
