A Meldreth woman, struck by the privileged position of her baby compared with the desperation of refugees escaping conflict in the Middle East, will use his first birthday as an opportunity to help others.

Instead of buying gifts for her son Rory, Amanda Smith is asking that people buy warm gloves or socks to go to those who are in a destitute position trying to cross into Europe for a better future.

The nurse, who is currently on maternity leave, said: “I think how fortunate my son is when I see all these things happening in the news.

“When I take him out with me, I worry his hands will get cold, and then I see these babies who are freezing and have nothing.

“I have never done anything like this, so I took this opportunity to try to raise money.”

Amanda, who moved to Meldreth in October last year, plans to send the donated gifts to Greece and will be collecting on behalf of the British Red Cross at the fundraiser.

The event will be held between 10am and 12pm at Meldreth Village Hall on Sunday, March 20.

There will be a bucket collection at the front of the hall instead of entry fees.

She is also asking the community and local businesses if they would be able to donate any prizes for a raffle draw, and to make cakes for a cake stall.

She said: “There will be a face painter there.

“I am also hoping to have a bouncy castle as well, but I am currently on maternity leave, so funds are very limited.”
