Life in World War One was the focus of an exhibition by a village history group.

The Melbourn History group put on the display at All Saints Church in the village, and the event drew large crowds on Saturday and Sunday.

Fifteen display stands had been produced, featuring life in the trenches, as well as descriptions on how the village had ‘carried on’ while the war was raging on the western front and also in the Middle East.

Colin Limming, from the Melbourn History Group, said: “There were two panels that showed a description of the recent trip made by Melbourn Village College pupils to the war cemeteries and also a panel that featured the work carried out by Meldreth Local History Group, who also co-operated by lending display cases that showed various memorabilia kindly loaned by Melbourn residents.

“The Barrington branch of the Royal British Legion also brought along their display of World War 1 artefacts and these aroused great interest with those who attended.”

Now the exhibition is over, the display panels will now be housed at Melbourn Village College, and are currently on show for pupils and staff to view.

“The panels will be used again probably at the time of Remembrance Day events in the village,” said Mr Limming.

For some members of the group, the project marks the final chapter of 15 years of preserving history in Melbourn, which has included the publication of four books looking at various aspects of the village’s history.

As reported in The Crow in February, the group was set to disband as its core members were looking to step down and hand the baton on to the younger generation.

Some new members have since come forward, but anyone interested in getting involved should contact Mr Limming on 01763 260072.
