Melbourn Community Hub has hosted an exhibition to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

The ‘1914-1918 The Great War’ display at the hub in High Street featured fallen soldiers who are named on the village’s war memorial.

The information was put together by Melbourn History Group and included the story of Charles ‘Charley’ Dodkin, a farm labourer who later joined the 1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment, enlisting in Royston.

He served in the trenches during the First Ypres campaign, then the Battle of Festubert, and the Battle of Loos, culminating in the Battle of the Somme.

Charles died in 1916 and was laid to rest in Merville Community Cemetery at Nord in France.

Another soldier from the village featured in the exhibition was Private Sidney Webb of the Grenadier Guards during the First World War and was interviewed by the Crow for our edition of November 6, 1914.
