ROYSTON'S mayor Cllr Lynn Berry handed out community service awards and Community Chest grants at the annual town meeting on Thursday.

Those receiving community service awards included teenage bowls player Matt Coppen, who claimed the All-England under-25 title last August.

The 16-year-old ex-Meridian School student is due to represent England in the British Isles Championships later this year.

Cllr Berry gave a community award, too, to Anthony Carroll, the head teacher of St Mary's RC School for his more than 25 years dedication to education.

Husband-and-wife Steve and Michelle Renwick received an award for their dedication to Scouting in Royston.

Celia Walpole, who retired as Royston town clerk at the end of last year, was given a community award for her 13 years' work.

And there was an award, too, for Crow editor Les Baker, when he was recognised for the 16 years he spent as a town councillor and district councillor, and "dedicated support" to the Royston & District Museum.

The Community Chest grants included one to The Tom Easton Flavosum Trust, which was set up after the murder of 21-year-old ex-Meridian student Tom Easton.

Other Community Chest grants went to the Air Cadets (Basingbourn), the Anthony Nolan Trust, the Archaeology Family Fun Day, Home-Start Royston and South Cambridgeshire, the Royston Arts Society, the Royston Choral Society, the Royston Community Association, the Royston District Scouts Council, the Royston Friends of Guiding, the Royston Town Band, St John Ambulance, The Open House Project, the Royston Pink Ribbon Run/Walk Committee, and the Westgate Dance Fund.
