SIXTY Army cadets and the Mayor of Royston were put through their paces on Sunday when they planted nearly 1,000 trees at a new weekend training centre in Bassingbourn. Cadets from Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and the Air Training Corps joined mayor Cllr Bill Prime to mark the £3 million centre's near completion. The cadet training centre, based at the Army Training Regiment at Bassingbourn Barracks, is due to be finished later in the year. Major Graham Taylor, cadet executive officer of the Bedfordshire Army Cadet Force, said: "It will be interesting to see it developing over the years." The weekend training centre will include sleeping accommodation, canteen facilities, and classrooms. It will also allow the cadets to make use of all the other outdoor training facilities at the barracks, including using the ranges and adventure-training facilities, such as sailing. Building started last March, and three time capsules wereburied in its foundations.
