A PROPOSAL to provide past mayors with badges to recognise their civic standing prompted a prolonged discussion at Buntingford Town Council's meeting on Thursday. Some councillors strongly objected to the idea because each badge would cost about £380. Cllr Sanjit Basra said: "Whoever wants badges should pay for them themselves. It shouldn't come from public funding. "If someone wants to fund it privately it's up to them. But the public wouldn't like it if it costs the town council." Former mayor Cllr Pat Whittaker said: "I think the town council should pay half towards the costs. They are a nice idea." Another ex-mayor, Cllr Eunice Woods, said: "It's an expensive thing to do and I don't think we can ask the town council to pay for anything like that." Deputy town clerk Eddie Plume said: "All other towns provide badges for past mayors, but this council has never done it. However, some time ago it was suggested we should. "What's likely to happen is there will be anonymous donations.
