TOWN councillors are still to decide whether to submit a bid to run Royston market.

They discussed the issue during a behind-closed-doors meeting of the Finance committee on Monday evening.

It is understood that a working party to examine the issue has been set-up.

The move comes after the town council received paperwork from North Herts District Council saying that it had been selected as one of the bodies which could apply for the tender.

Other tender applications are believed to have been sent out to commercial organisations which run markets.

The district council has in recent months been looking at handing over the running of Royston market on a tender basis.

In April, town councillors and the Royston Town Centre Forum decided that a submission should be sent to the district council showing an interest in running the market.

But there were warnings then about the town council actually running the market.

The move this week will see the working party look at the whole issue and then report to the town council on July 23 - almost a week after the deadline for the district council to receive tender applications.

The public and Press were banned from the discussions on the market under a confidentiality clause issued by the district council.

The clause said: "The tender documents and any other information issued by the council should be treated as private and confidential and should not be disclosed in whole or in part to any third party.
