SUPPORT for the second 24 hour postal strike that started today was patchy across North Herts with a union official saying many staff crossed the picket line at the Royal Mail office in Grantham Close, Royston.

Today's strike affected delivery staff throughout Crow country and also involved Royal Mail offices in Hitchin and Letchworth GC.

But a union official said there was only 50-50 backing for the stoppage in Royston and Letchworth GC and Royston and some staff had also crossed picket line in Hitchin.

Steve Butts, the area representative for the Communication Workers Union (CWU), said: "There is about 50-50 support for the strike in Royston and Letchworth. We have 20 pickets at Hitchin but 10 people have gone in out of a staff of 75.

"During the 24 hour strike at Stevenage yesterday only nine people worked out of 300 staff which was a very good response."

Mr Butts said there had been great support from the public.

"The public now understand what we are up against and what we are fighting for which is our jobs," added Mr Butts.
