A MOTHER has spoken of her pride over her son's marathon run for an organisation that will benefit her daughter.

Jackie Bullen’s son Jamie, 29, will run the Brighton Marathon on April 10 and will hope to raise £1,000 for the UK Goalball Squad, of which his visually-impaired sister Georgie, 14, is a member.

Mrs Bullen said: “Jamie is working hard to ensure he completes the course and is running five miles every morning and evening.

“He has changed his diet and is determined to succeed to help his sister. I’m so proud and excited that this could benefit her.”

Former Melbourn Village College student Georgie was diagnosed with a rare and untreatable eye condition at the age of four and has since struggled with her site.

The Shepreth girl attended a talent identification day for the UK Paralympic Team in 2008, and became interested in Goalball – a sport played by the visually-impaired.

“The game is not for the faint hearted,” said Mrs Bullen. “Players wear shades and use a ball with bells in it, and it makes for a fast, fierce exciting and strategic game.”

Georgie became the youngest player to represent the UK Goalball team when she played at the European Championships in Germany in 2009, and has since cemented her place as an important member of the squad.

“The squad are now on track for the Paralympics but they are a poorly funded, and compared to many of their competitors their training sessions and funds for travelling to competitions are restricted,” said Mrs Bullen.

“In order to have any realistic chance of a medal they need support, which is why Jamie’s run is so important.”
