A man has been taken to hospital in serious condition in the second collision on the A505 in 24 hours, emergency services have now confirmed.

Police were called to the scene at around 7.40am yesterday to reports of a crash between the Tesco roundabout in Royston and the A10 junction.

Just one vehicle – a black Vespa scooter – was involved. Road closures were put in place as the ambulance services assisted the man.

A rapid response vehicle, two ambulances and the East Anglian Air Ambulance attended the scene and the patient was taken by land ambulance to hospital in a serious condition.

This was the second crash on the A505 in 24 hours, as another involving two cars took place just after 5pm on Wednesday.

It involved a blue Ford Focus and a blue Seat Ibiza which were travelling westbound between Royston and Baldock. Nobody was injured.

Both of these incidents sparked an increase in membership of the ‘Make the A505 safer’ Facebook group, which was set up by Royston woman Lynsey Langdon after her husband was involved in a crash on the road in 2016.

She took to the Facebook page and said: “We have had over 100 new members join this page in one day which is amazing. I’m standing by this campaign and I’m solid in what I started.

“We have to make this road safer and we need to shout loud. My husband had his accident in July 2016 and we are still living it, as many are after their loved ones have been hurt.

“Please step up and email councillors. Together, we can move a mountain.”

One poster wrote: “Coming from Royston to turn into Ashwell is so dangerous, especially for young inexperienced drivers of bikers. Vision is limited and you’re crossing the fast lane first. God forbid they should stall like I did once, the turning is a nightmare. A big campaign is needed.”

Another said: “It just needs the speed limit reduced to 50mph with speed cameras. It’s not rocket science at the end of the day, and it worked on the A414.”
