The final man involved in a major brawl in Royston last year has been sentenced.

Paul Payne, 22, pleaded guilty to affray. Eight other defendants were sentenced on May 25 at Luton Crown Court.

Payne, of Days Close, Royston, was given a three- month prison sentence suspended for a year, with supervision and an alcohol treatment requirement. He was ordered to pay £122 costs.

Judge Geoffrey Breen watched a dvd of the events outside the Nu Bar in Market Hill on Sept 29 last year.

Prosecuting, Robert Dalling said trouble had flared inside the club between local men and a group of people who had travelled down from Wigan for a wedding.

They spilled out of the club and for about 20 minutes there was a melee involving 30-40 people scuffling, punching, and kicking.

Two people were badly injured and the person responsible for that had been jailed.

Judge Breen told Payne at Luton Crown Court on Monday: "Your involvement was significantly less than the others, but instead of getting out of the way and going home, you got involved.

"This sort of offence causes a great deal of distress, fear and inconvenience to ordinary decent citizens."

He said Payne had recently suffered a "life-changing health setback" which may have changed his outlook on life.
