A man has been arrested on suspicion of possession and attempting to sell offensive weapons, and possession of a firearm while at a public event in Royston.

Officers immediately attended the car meet in Orchard Road on January 14 after being tipped-off by a member of the public.

They apprehended the 49-year-old suspect who had a stall to sell the weapons – 18 credit card style folding knives, six CS gas canister sprays, a butterfly knife and a taser device – and the man was also arrested on suspicion of selling noxious gas and possession of a firearm.

North Herts Chf Insp Julie Wheatley said: “We will not tolerate the selling of offensive weapons in North Herts and I would urge the public not to purchase them if they discover anything similar for sale.

“Anyone found to be carrying an offensive weapon could face a criminal record, a fine and even imprisonment.

“I’d also like to thank the member of the public who reported their suspicions to us and would encourage everyone to please contact police via the police non-emergency number 101 if you are aware someone is selling illegal items, or if you witness anyone committing any other crime.”

The man has been released on bail and is due to return to Stevenage Police Station on March 11.

Owner of Royston Modified Car Community Darren Bull wishes to make it clear this was not an event run by his organisation.

“The Royston Modified Car Community and myself have worked very closely with police and Royston Town Council to be able to hold our events in Orchard Way, and have now done so for more than five years with no incidents of this nature taking place,” he said.
