Emily May, 12, a talented flute player from Litlington has been crowned a runner-up in the Cambridge Young Musician of the Year competition. Emily, who attends St Mary's School in Cambridge, also won the 10-12 age category. Her mum, Hilary, said: "Emily has been playing the flute since she was seven and has been going to the same teacher in Royston, Rachel Haynes, since she started. "She had to compete in the wind section and played the York Bowen Flute Sonata in front of experienced judges from across the country. She then went to a final for her age group and won, and then had to compete with the winners of the other age groups. "I'm so proud of her." "We decided to enter as she is so advanced for her age, and my husband saw an advert for the competition and we thought it was worth a go. "The judges were looking for somebody with grace and poise who enjoyed performing, and Emily obviously showed that," she added. Emily won a cup and a cheque for £100, which she says she's putting towards buying her first car.
