CURATE Averil Lauckner is probably thinking now that she did not have one of the greatest ideas for this year's Royston Parish Church annual fete.

It was her idea to have a ducking stool - because she had seen it as a success elsewhere.

But for having such an idea she had to endure being a "victim" of the ducking stool twice on Saturday.

The activity certainly had the makings of being a good idea at the time.

But she was not the only victim.

The Rev Les Harman had to spend the compulsory half-an-hour on the ducking stool, as did the Rev John Fidler and the parish church's licensed reader Tony Mills.

And it was appropriate, too, that organiser Trevor Lloyd had to spend a session in the booth.

One other victim was Crow editor Les Baker, who had "volunteered" for one of the sessions.

The church is hoping to raise more money than last year to help towards restoration costs.
