MP Oliver Heald turned charity shop worker on Saturday.

He was the latest "recruit" to the staff of volunteers at the Barnardo's Charity Shop in Angel Pavement.

He took on the job as part of Make a Difference Day during Volunteers' Week.

His tasks included serving customers, washing up, opening donations of clothing - and working the shop's steam cleaner.

"This shop makes a vital difference to the work of Barnado's in helping children.

"It is a fine example of what volunteering can achieve," he said.

He added he appreciated meeting the team at the charity shop, many of whom had been working there as volunteers for many years.

David Booker, head of volunteering at Barnado's, said: "Volunteering in a Barnado's shop is of enormous benefit to the charity.
