Make the A505 Safer: Sign our petition for change between Royston and Baldock

Since the Crow launched its Make the A505 Safer campaign last week, we’ve had messages, comments, calls and tweets from the community supporting our call for action flooding in.
Our campaign for safety improvements between Royston and Baldock came about due to the number of incidents we report on, and the many more near-misses we hear about.
Readers have been getting in touch in their droves, whether it be a short message using #MakeTheA505Safer or an email detailing their or their loved ones’ experiences on the road and what they think needs to be done to improve safety.
Tony Friend told the Crow: “The slip roads on the dual carriageway are indeed dangerous. Only last Monday, I was travelling back to Royston from Baldock in the outside lane at Slip End when a lorry decided to turn right and use the slip road to Wallington. It was just after the speed camera as the A505 rises and then falls into the dip.
“Not only did the driver slow the traffic considerably but, having made the turn, his lorry was too long to wait on the island before he could proceed.
You may also want to watch:
“I was not able to pass and had to stop with cars coming up behind me at speed. Obviously I could not switch to the busy inside lane, but my other fear was that any traffic behind would have had their views impaired by the hill.
“This has happened to me before and I’m now wary about overtaking on that stretch.

“I suggest the slip road at Slip End is dispensed with and a much-needed roundabout installed for the Ashwell turn at Odsey. Traffic needing Wallington from Baldock would have to use this and then turn back.”
Louise Neville got in touch to say: “My boyfriend had a near-miss on the stretch when someone pulled out without looking, from the centre to get across to the other side. Luckily he had quick reactions to swerve.
“The crossroads on the A505 are so dangerous. It’s very hard to find your perfect moment when cars are going at such speed to get across.”
The Crow is calling on Herts County Council and other agencies to act now. Concerns about the safety of the stretch between Royston and Baldock date back years – and now a feasibility study into the safety of the road is being carried out by the county council, which is due to be concluded in March.
While we wait people’s lives are still being put at risk every day on the stretch which has a 70mph speed limit, is dotted with cut-throughs in the central reservation for access to our rural villages, and slip lanes onto the junctions that are too short to be safe. Poor visibility and confusion about the road layout also leads to some drivers going up the carriageway the wrong way.
We have launched a petition to be sent to the county council with as many signatures as possible. This will show strength of feeling that people are frustrated waiting for action, and will hopefully get things moving – so please sign it if you feel the same.
Royston mum Lynsey Langdon, who has campaigned for change ever since her husband Greig broke his back in an accident at the Slip End junction in July 2016, said: “We need to get our voices heard and by signing the Crow’s petition hopefully Herts County Council will take people’s concerns seriously. Something needs to be done with this road now, before more people are hurt.”
